I didn't bother to read what Boruk wrote, I never do. But here are five of the best trades in Flyers history.

In 1973
TO PHI: the rights to Bernie Parent
TO TOR: Doug Favell
Shouldn't even need to explain this one.

In 1974
To PHI: Reggie Leach
TO OAK: Al McAdam, Larry Wright a 1974 1st (Ron Chipperfield) and future considerations.
McAdam ending up being a solid player, but nowhere near the impact player Leach was during much of his time with the Flyers. His playoff run in 1976 when he scored 19 goals in 16 games is one of the all time great NHL playoff performances. The rest of the Oakland acquisitions were totally forgettable.

In 1982
TO PHL: Mark Howe, 1983 3rd (Derrick Smith)
TO HAR: Ken Linseman, Greg Adams, 1983 1st (David Jensen), 1983 3rd (Leif Carlsson)
Basically the Flyers acquired a the best Dman in team history and future hall of famer along with a pick that became a solid checking forward for a 2nd line center, a role player and 2 picks that were both busts.

In 1995
TO PHI: John Leclair, Eric Desjardins, Gilbert Dionne
TO MON: Mark Recchi, 1995 3rd (Martin Hohenberger)
Read Bill's blog for the skinny on this one, suffice to say it was a great deal for the Flyers

In 2007: This is basically a 2 parter, first..
TO PHI: Scottie Upshall, Ryan Parent, 2007 1st and 3rd
TO NAS: Peter Forsberg
and next...
TO PHI: the rights to Kimmo Timonen and Scott Hartnell
TO NAS: Nashville's 2007 1st
The Flyers were in full rebuilding mode at this point and were able to turn Peter Forsberg and his chronically afflicted feet into Kimmo Timonen, Scott Hartnell and Scottie Upshall. This was probably the best move made by Paul Holmgren during his entire tenure as GM.

Honorable mentions:
The Macleish deal in 1971
The Brind'amour deal in 1991
The Coburn deal in 2007

I can't even read the stuff on NBC site. Not only is it mostly BS but the comments are beyond dumb.

I do not think the Kris Versteeg trade that brought the third-round pick the Flyers used on Shayne Gostisbehere merits anything close to a top five spot.
- bmeltzer

I agree. You have to view the trade based on when it was made, not revisited years later. It's why the Eminger for a first was terrible, but the Sharp for Ellison was slightly bad. Eminger was an able but unspectacular bottom-4 defenseman and was not worth a first rounder, no matter who the pick was used on. By the same notion, although Sharp was a better center than Ellison was a winger when the trade was made, no one expected Sharp to become a constant 30+ goal scorer at the NHL level when the trade was made.

The same is true of the Brayden Schenn trade. People keep saying, "Wait a few years and we'll see if it was worth it." While it's true that it will take a few years to see if Frost and Farabee make the Flyers better than Schenn may have, you have to view it when it was made. Was Brayden Schenn better, worse, or equal to 2 1st round picks and Jori Lehtera when he was traded? Was his cap hit worth his role on the team? That's how it has to be evaluated.

Interesting...what are your views of Tie Domi, Scoot Stevens, and Matthew Barnaby wrt Sandstrom?

I didn't start watching the Flyers until they got Lindros, so I just remember Sandstrom as a good player on the LA team. But guys like Stevens, Kaparitis, Barnaby, Domi (Burt incident), and Claude Lemieux were the players I grew up hating.

Don't have any opinion on Scoot Stevens, but Scott Stevens can eat a Richard. Domi was a gutless puke but when it comes to the Leafs of that era, I hated Darcy Tucker much more. Barnaby was an annoying little weasel, but occasionally he did make me laugh out loud with some of his antics. Guys like Kasparitis, Ulf Samuelsson and James Neal can rot in hell for all I care, I have no respect for that type of cheap shot P.O.S.

That is being too complimentary and is an insult to pieces of sh!t everywhere. If Tomas Sandstrom was on fire, not only wouldn't I piss on him, but I'd spend my last dollar on a jug of gasoline to throw on him.

Yup another miserable excuse for a human being and probably, after Sandstrom, the number 2 guy on my all time hate list.

Regarding Simmonds, it seems that an extension of 1-3 years is in the best interests of the Flyers. However, comparable players are receiving extensions in the 5-6 year range. It sounds like the Flyers will make the effort to keep him with competitive salary per year. Just not sure if Simmonds is willing to take less years on the contract.
If his injury recovery does affect this season, I can see him taking less years to stay with the Flyers.

Loyalty and hometown discounts are fine, but no player, including Simmonds is going to take a 3 year deal for something like 21 million when other GMs are going to put 6 years and 35 million or so on the table. Not gonna happen.

Yeah very easy to forget that, but I still sit around some days and wonder if Patrick Kane was drafted by the Flyers...would he still be a cocky little turd, how would a Giroux-Kane line look, would 2010 be different.
